Gentle Detoxing

Personally, I’m not one for big detox diets where you half starve yourself and live on fruit and veg or less for days/weeks on end – I like my food too much! For me, I prefer to live life as healthily as possible and do what I can to reduce my intake of toxins all year round.

What are toxins?
From Wikipedia – “Toxins can be small molecules, peptides, or proteins that are capable of causing disease on contact with or absorption by body tissues”

In small doses, they’re not too harmful but I feel that we are now being swamped with toxic chemicals and as they are found everywhere in products (food, drink, personal and household items) and our environment, they’re difficult to avoid. So here are my tips to  gently detox all year round.

1. Keep Hydrated
Drinking enough water will help flush some toxins out of our body. It also helps maintain a good flow in the lymphatic system. Drink it hot or cold, with or without food such as lemons, oranges, lime and cucumber.

2. Avoid Over-Processed Foods
Cook food from scratch as often as you can and source food locally. Organic is the best, but can be more expensive and limiting in choices. Find a local farm shop, use your local butchers and greengrocers etc. Food will be healthier, more environmentally friendly (less plastic packaging) and you’re supporting local businesses. Yes, I do indulge in the odd take-away or pizza, but much less than I used to!

3. Move, Stretch and Exercise
Do something to get you moving every day. Walking is great as it gets you outside, breathe in fresh air and enjoy the daylight/sunshine. Stretch and excercise at whatever level and intensity suits you. The aim is to get the body moving and prevent the lymphatic system from stagnating. Our lymphatic system needs movement to work efficiently as it doesn’t have a pump like the circulatory system.

4. Body Therapies
Therapies like massage and Bowen are a great way to relax you, help your body rebalance, improve posture and so aid lymphatic circulation. Less aches and pains will mean you can mobilise more and do No. 3 (above) more easily!

5. Detox Bath
An easy and more luxuriating way to help your body detox, is by having regular warm baths with 1-2 cups of Epsom Salts, 1 cup of Bicarbonate of Soda and 10 drops of Essential Oils like Lavender, Rosemary or Mandarin. You could also use this as a foot soak instead, just reduce quantities (2 tblsp E.S, 1 tblsp B.S & 4 drops E.O)

6. Avoid Toxins in Personal and Household Products
There are lots of ‘off the shelf’ products containing toxic chemicals that are now proving to be toxic to our bodies. Some toxins like Parabens are showing up in cancerous breast tissue. Do your research. Check Are Your Products Safe?  Find products that are less toxic, environmentally friendly and animal-cruelty free. I shop with Wikaniko where I find about 95% of what I want to buy for me and my home. I’ve even had a go at making my own bits like eye makeup remover with Fractionated Coconut Oil and often use Bicarbonate of Soda to clean with! Why not give it a go? 7. Intolerance Testing
Our Liver is a major organ in our body filtering and diluting toxins, making it easier for elimination. When we absorb too many toxins it can get overloaded and not work so efficiently, possibly causing dis-ease. Our bodies can get quite sensitive and sometimes for no apparent reason, you’ll find that certain foods or drinks won’t agree with you. By getting an Intolerance Test you’ll find out what you’re sensitive too and if you eleminate these items for 4 weeks, you’ll be giving your liver a rest. Hopefully, when you re-introduce the items, you’ll find you can now tolerate them more easily, although you may find some more tolerable than others.

8. Stay Positive
Work at keeping positive every day. If you get toxic negative thoughts, write them down. What’s causing them and what steps could you take to turn them into a positive. There are usually answers to all problems. Ask for help and remember to be grateful for what you do have in life. Keep company with those who make you feel good.

I’m sure there are lots of other things we can do regularly to be less toxic. Let me know what you do, I’d love to know. 🙂
